So where the fuck is your promised self starring video, Jamesy Rogers?

I made a whole damn bowl of pop corn for when you said you'd announce it.

Then you didn't announce it at that time.

Now my pop corn is old and moist.  All the crunchyness gone.

Oi.

Are you having script problems or something?

Yay!  It better be worth it.

Well I'm going on an animal drive now and then I have a pizza party again.

But some time in the next 24 hours I'll view your masterpiece.

Later human!

Coffee, cigarettes, and a Missing scene!  Love it.  As far as what's left, I think there is always something new.  New fads, new politics, new science, new disasters, social concerns, etc.  All of it can be inspiration for a new slant on an old story.

I propose my new film idea:  NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEMOCRATS.  A family of Trump supporters must hole up in their home to fight off hordes of Russian conspiracy protestors, carrying torches.

You could havet a Ferguson style race riot, where a cop station tries to protect prisoner transfer, George Zimmerman (of course, a different name!).

Better yet, a trio of American indie filmmakers hide a South African refugee (whose farm and studio got torched), in their closets.  After the refugee becomes inhospitable, they try to get their Canadian film friend to take him in.  In order to get him across the country, they dress him up as a hideous woman, to throw off suspicion.

Forget Hollywood's superior gore and FX.  I think it's more about connecting with a viral idea.  Just some thoughts.

P.S.  I retitled this thread to reflect the subject matter.

First thing; I loved this little vid of a layed back James, drinking coffee...or whatever..and smoking and just having a cool discussion about all things movie related. Really good vibes! James, you're so talented dude, it's a real shame you're not working on some zillion dollar production somewhere. Thanks a ton for posting this because it got me motivated to take action again in my life and get something done.

I'm going to make a welcome Indieclub vid soon and show what I'm working on. Yes I want to make money, but I might be a little more grounded in reality than most.

James' video was good.  I don't think this can possibly compare.  I apologize in advance, as I was in a very sarcastic mood.  At least I made some sort of video.

First question...I thought Squirt was your beverage of choice..what the hell happened? Second question, was that Ash?

Mike..with the resources you have, you could easily turn into a Youtube factory. Cast your kids and pooch in some sci-fi adventure series and it's Solid Gold City.

That was pretty outstanding!  I loved seeing some of the things you did in years past... Man, don't you love the look of film?  Nothing like it.. and you have access to so much; cop cars, tasers, uniforms... I think my favorite clip was the one from your crawing hand movie.  Funny!

Movies are definitely a huge part of your life, Mike. See, as where movie making brings me frustration, it looks like it brings you a lot of joy.  And I hope you know how lucky you are to have a woman who supports your need to make movies.  Sarah use to support me but now, all I get are strange looks and comments about how I'm wasting my time and money.. Marisol (the house maid according to Marius) just doesn't understand..

Thanks for making a video... That's 2 members complete and 3 to go.... Funny but after I made my video it crossed my mind that "I just made a video for 4 guys"...  I told Marisol  "I'm going to upload the video to Youtube so that everyone at IndieClub can see it"... She asked "how many people are going to see it?"... I paused, thought about it then answered with mild embarrassement "4"......

Nice job, Mike!

"Is this a new tragedy?  Sorry to hear about it."

Yeah it seems I'm riding a wave of radicalized highs and lows.  First came incredible highs.  Then came the lows, and they are much lower than I'm used to.

But I can't talk about it because it will be off topic.  Only society videos discussed here.

There was some derogatory language about a certain person.  If you really want me to restore the comments, I will.   I wouldn't be much of a moderator (and I'm not), but I'll leave that decision to you.

As for the video?  I think you should just point the phone at yourself, say a couple of smart-assed things, and post to Youtube.  No editing; just do a one take.  If it goes well, you can do more, later.

Thanks for watching, Marius.  The last thing I was trying to make was a flattering video, so I did it with messy hair and a messy house.  One of the reasons I don't want to do IndieMeet this year is because it is not presentable.  We want to get new flooring, fans, certain furmiture, etc.

As for my success, I suck.  If you want to see success from IndieClub, look up David Lowery (Road Dog Productions).  He made a short, called STILL, that was posted here, years back.  Anyway, he wrote/directed the Disney remake of PETE'S DRAGON and is currently working on the new PETER PAN.  Interesting article about him here:

"Don't listen to Marius and his unnecessary insults. He has no manners and there is no humor in what he writes."

There was no intention of humor in any of that.  No intentions of insults neither.

"Wow! Indie boy makes good"

Again, there is nothing "indie" about someone working for Disney you fool!  You do know an "indie filmmaker" is somebody making his own films independent of major studios, right?

Mike Conway

My dream was to direct studio movies that I wrote.  It means you make a living making movies, without sucking years out of your life, working a second job..  Pinnacle filmmakers, like Spielberg, Raimi, Jackson, Blomkamp (from your neck of the woods) made indie movies, and then Hollywood wanted them to make big budget versions of those indie movies, so that the whole world would see them.  That's an ultimate scenario!

I don't know if David Lowery will ever look at this board again, but I congratulate him, big time!

"That's an ultimate scenario!"

Ooooooooooookey, so........... the independent filmmaker's dream should be to become a non-independent filmmaker who never has to be an independent filmmaker again?

Makes sense from a financial point of view.

I see it now.  Thanks for teaching me the ways of the world, Mike!

In conclusion, indie filmmaking should be something you use as a disposable tool to reach a bigger goal of breaking into mainstream filmmaking.  After that, discard any indie filmmaking like a snake skin you have outgrown.

I'm afraid I've been doing it all wrong.  I did not particularly care about becoming a hollywood big shot.  Maybe I should have.  I could have made it.  Instead, I lived an actual life in the real world with actual people instead of actors and players in fantasy worlds.  How stupid of me.

Do you think it's fulfilling to do filmmaking in Hollywood, or is it just a dayjob that becomes an ordinary burden?

Part of me thinks it's such a glamorous illusion (positive feeling), while mostly I think it's pointless (negative feeling).  A pointless factory cramming out pointless garbage on top of pointless garbage (destroying any value by saturating the market) for people who sit in their homes wasting their lives with television because they have nothing to live for.  Do I want to do that?  Just that?  Is it even adding value to the collection of human heritage?

No.  But it was a job I could do for money.  Good money likely.  Money is all that matters in the end.

Goodnight now.

No, the goal is to make the movies you want, for the budget you want, for the exposure you want.  Whether you make movies in a studio or next to your home, the goal is to get them released - usually through a studio, as happened with my movie, TERRARIUM.  Studios have global reach and can get your movie anywhere.  Those filmmakers I listed do just that.  I want to do that.  You are being way too partisan.  Forget the definition of "indie" and start thinking about being a "filmmaker," which is inclusive of all venues.

I started mine some days ago then stopped and forgot about it coz I felt what's the point?  james seemed hateful to me, scott seemed hostile to me, sv bell and I don't exist in each other's frame of reference.  The only one who's at least being diplomatic is you.

Making a video showing myself and my doings to indieclub would be like throwing treasures to the pigs.

Instead I did as you inspired and made a list of immediate and mid-term goals and have been busy working them off a list from morning till bedtime.  It's wonderful!  Thanks Conway!  I feel much better now.

Do you wonder why this is?  Well, here is your most current example of that;

"Making a video showing myself and my doings to indieclub would be like throwing treasures to the pigs. "

Nearly every post of yours is in some way insulting, rude, and contrary to the way a person should act toward other people who he voluntarily chooses to spend time around... in short, I find you abusive.  There is no humor to your insults.  Nobody "had it coming".  You are just abusive for no apparent reason.  Besides the fact that  you are a long time member of this board, I think of you as an internet troll. You seem to only be here to cause trouble and demean people.

View My Profile

Really?  No idea?  Take a look at any handful of your posts.... I don't know, maybe people act differently in South Africa but I'm not use to dealing with a constant barrage of insults. Your goal seems to be a demonstration of complete and utter lack of respect for the few people who still visit this board. I get the impression that you are making fun of us but it's not just that.  It's the way you do it. You seem to be dermined to strip away everyone's dignity.... As for me, no, I have not had much succes making movie but I'm not a clown. I have managed to do pretty well for myself in life.  I have made a few short films. I did work for 2 years on a multi-million dollar project for Universal Studios.  I did design and create a dozen characters for a water ride at the Buffalo Bill's casino.  I did create character for a casino in Atlantic City.  My work can be seen in a few Indie films. I do have a portfolio of dozens of sculptures and props and make-ups that I have designed and created over the past 30 years,,,, yet in your eyes, I am apparently just some loser who doesn't have the guts to make a feature movie..... Other member of this board also have great resumes that show that they are not clowns. Great achievement born from talent, skill, dedication and hard work,,, but none if it means anything to you. When I read your posts I can almost hear you laughing at us and I don't like it... I don't hate  you but I don't know what your game is. Maybe when you come here it's just a part of your daily amusement. Internet trolls cause trouble for their own amusement.  They have no regard for anyone.  It's all just a joke for them.  I  know this because, in the past, I too made sport of people. Nothing I'm particularly proud of but at least I am aware of it.  You want us to beleive that your behavior is normal and we are blowing things out of proportion.  I disagree.... There is plently of room for playful kidding around but you cross the line with nearly every post you type.... In all fairness, maybe you truly are not aware of your behavior.  If that is the case, you need to step back and take a look at yourself.

I don't have time for this negativity any longer, superdude. Dealing with you is like looking into an ugly mirror. I have to keep reminding myself that your assessment of me is not true.  It's one thing to have someone tell me something negative but with underlying constructive meaning.  It's another to have someone comment on me as a person and try to bring me down..  Again, I don't have time for this negativity any longer.

Oh wow, I planned such a brilliant piece of cinema for this, but it will just be too much and too long and time won't allow.

I'll just start with a small one and if all goes good, we can start making series about ourselves.  I have the first ten episodes planned.

Planned but probably won't be executed.

But the first one, sheeza comin!  Won't have much in it, but it's a good start.

Drool, babies, drool!  Drool with excitement to watch it.

"Show us where you live - your bedroom, house, yard"

Oooooooooh, you want bedroom scenes do you?  Hubba hubba, I didn't know our relationship was at that level.  Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! ;)

My bedroom isn't my office, editing suite, music auditorium and bedroom all in one like yours.  I just sleep in mine.  Might make for a very long movie with not much going on aside from the shadow people wandering around my room.

I'll rather show you the exciting stuff I've been working on.

And some of what I do when I'm not living a life of heavenly filmmaking.  Although that's probably episode 2.  Which might never get made.

Will even this one get made?  Let's hope I feel like it over the weekend.  And time allows.  Social engagements may pop up at any moment.

K bye.  Enjoy the wait.

Dude....you can complain about James all you want but you ain't exactly driving the Welcome Wagon either. And James has done a helluva lot more for you than you for him. The only thing I remember you doing for him was offering him a whopping 5 dollar discount on his next purchase of International Treasure after he busted his ass helping you out with the graphics! Yeah Marius, you're a regular labor union organizer you are!

In your video, you should apologize to James and maybe the two of you can be buddies again.

Lol, you make it a regular habit now to get your facts all mixed up.  No dude, he got the video free and it wasn't International Treasure (which he also got free but didn't say thank you for).  And he made a 5 second zoom shot from four still images, not "busted his ass with the graphics".

Anyway, you're missing the point.  The point is he's suffering from some kind of distrust syndrome, which is quite unnecessary.

Like when I put up pictures of my new studio, what do you do?  You follow the adventure with me.

What does James do?  He accuses me of posting fake images "lifted from a magazine".

Or the reason he won't do a sculpture for my 3 DVD series, is because he doesn't believe I'm actually making a 3 DVD series.  WTF is that all about?  Why would that be so hard to believe?  He's known for 10 years I make DVD movies.  He even has my DVD's at his house.

So why distrust so severely?

That was my problem right there.

And that's the reason he wanted me to make this "society" video.  Because he distrusts that I am me.

Like, if I'm not me, exactly who does he think is me?  That he will also never explain.

There's just no point going through life with baseless distrust as one's main motivation, 'sall.

Well maybe he's just fucking with you like you've fucked with him. Cmon Marius, you have to admit you have insulted the shit outta James for no reason. Like when you told him his avatar was ugly. Now tell me I got my facts wrong on that one.

And how come you're giving James free product when I have to pay for everything? That's double bullshit right there.

That avatar was ugly.  Admit it.  If he was gonna post something that ugly, he might as well use his real face.

No wait, that came out wrong.

He posted a completely different person than him, pulling a face or being made up ugly or something.  Wasn't scoring James any points.

If he liked that actor, he could use a decent photo of him.  Would make a more fitting impression.

Speaking of which, why don't you have an avatar?

Anyway, the subject wasn't who what when where what who Marius is insulting.  You said "maybe the two of you can be buddies again."

No, we can't.  Friendship is based on trust.  If James soils it with ugly, baseless distrust, it can never be.  That was the very point I was trying to bring across.

But don't worry.  I already found a good replacement friend:  A piece of crumpled up toilet paper.  You'd be amazed at the fun we're having!

Here paper, bounce some more on my hands!!  Wheeee! Look at him go!

Now we're gonna go play with the fan.  I wanna see how far this sucka can jump!

Pfff, and you were all, "oh james is so fantastic!"  Let's see James blow in a fan!

I wish James had left his video up...it was cool. He can really make neat stuff.

As an aside I did visit your online store to buy your 3 dvd set but it's still not available....any release date on that Marius?

Don't worry;  when I post my video I'll post it in a new thread including James' and Mike's too so they're all together for convenience.  Hopefully with yours too by then.

The 3 DVD set should be ready in about a month to 6 weeks.  I'll keep you well updated on that, thanks old chum.  We're hard at work on that one but I'm so tempted to finish my "society video" now first.  Darn you all and your tempting me with such pleasure!!

Lol, no it might take a bit of time to finish my masterpiece.

Keap another steak in the deep freeze for when that time comes.

You do of course realise you haven't posted your movie yet?  You must have forgotten.  Please see to it.

That would have made sense in the 1960's to -70's.

Well, gotta go get the horses to pull my carriage to town.  You should see my carriage.  Latest, fastest model with gold decorations everywhere and velvet padded seats.  Bet there ain't no vehicle currently that can beat it's speed!

Enjoy feasting on steak!

What camera are you using these days Marius?
mokkimachi

All sorts.  I think two are HD Canons and one splashproof JVC for shooting in snow and at sea and in freezing temperatures and one Samsung photo & video camera and one is one of those sports cameras in the clear casing for underwater photography and another one is one of those you suck onto your car window to get driving shots and one is a computer tablet that does 4K and another is my father's 4K GoPro for aerial photography and then he also has a drone with its own HD camera I can use if I ever learn how and so forth and forth.

I don't have any of them with me now so I can't give you model numbers.

Will I get a Super 8 film camera?

Who knows what the future brings but I'm almost certain I'm not getting no movieola and such and such.  I'll just shoot on film and edit on computer.  No matter what your workflow, at some point things are gonna have to go digital.

At this time the buying film part also sounds like an expense that can be done without, not to mention the development costs and transport.

I like the digital idea of shooting for free and editing for virtually free and watching for virtually free.  But I guess you know all such obvious things.  Going back to pay for that seems like devolution.  But I will also admit I probably just haven't caught the film bug yet.

Wow, you have alot of nice gear Marius! I'm extremely interested in this new Super8 camera coming out. Why? Because ever since I saw Mike Conway's movie, THE BLACK CRYSTAL, I was hooked on it. But for now I'll just use a cell phone or maybe a GoPro.

Another question Marius..in your professional opinion, would a GoPro do a good job with chroma key work?

Yes yes, you'll all watch everybody's video's again when mine's done.  Never mind James and his childish tantrums of robbing the collection of his contribution.  I'll just use time travel to go back and get it and repost it here.

What's James' childish game anyway?  We all know he's just gonna whiteknuckle trying to stay away from this website then start lurking again to see if we noticed he's gone and then finally he will join again, first probably as someone else until finally he'll just want to be himself again.

Where else is he gonna go anyway where people are gonna put up with his kak?  We're his only friends (or thereabouts) who understand what it's like.

Maybe he thinks he can have these filmmaking conversations with his cat.  Poor cat must be so abused, whatwith living in a house where James smokes like a chimney.  Sies!!

"would a GoPro do a good job with chroma key work?"

Can't think why it wouldn't.  Can't think why most any camera wouldn't.  Good greenscreen work depends more on the shooting stage.  Is the greenscreen nice and an even green and your subjects colored far from the same green and everything lit well?  Etc. Etc.

Then good software, even simple good software will take it from there.  And a good eye for detail.

Shooting in 4K or higher probably can only be beneficial for composite work.

"Marius..in your professional opinion"

I don't do "professional" opinions.  I do babbling as I see it at the time with the experience I have at the time of the answer.

Well I have some rather sad news to report.   Toily is dead :(

I suppose I should have known the day would come.

Who was Toily? A pet? I hate when that happens. Like when Mike said his dog Ash died. Even though Ash would try to bite me, it made me sad thinking he was gone. He was such a ham!

I told you about him earlier in this thread. Toily Papa was my friend, the piece of crumpled up toilet paper.  Oh the fun we had!

But then, I used him to wipe my sweatcrack and Toily stank, so I washed him but then he completely disintegrated.

I managed to get a few small pieces together though so the funeral will be this afternoon at lunch time.  I just can't decide if a burial is in order or a cremation.

Sad yes, but don't worry, I already am getting along swimmingly with his cousin, Tilly Pippy.  We've already been intimate.

And now, I'm afraid if you read all the way to here, I can't give you your last 30 seconds back.  Sorry :)

Well I'm gonna go edit some more on my society film.  Whatever is society about it.

Ok, I'm gonna get a GoPro and shoot.

"

Yay!!  Shoot it yeah!!  Shoot and never stop.

I'm guessing between 8 to 15 minutes.  Hard to tell yet.

I put in far too much effort and time into this than would make any kind of economic sense.  But we'll just say this is my present to you people.  And I'm thoroughly enjoying giving it.

I'm just as fat as a walrus in it but yeah, I guess for someone who's been incapable of doing any cardio for months, it's not bad at all.  In fact, this movie has been the most exercise I've had since being robbed of the ability to walk by that driver that ran me over.

If you watch this movie, you'll even believe I can walk just fine.  It was more painful than hell, especially afterwards, but in the excitement of moviemaking, I could push myself to walk for miles and do this thing for hours.

Which was good.  I needed to get back into my life again.  This here movie was just the thing.  Thanks for the idea!  Which I first thought was an unnecessary waste of valuable time, but I now love.

Anyway, is yours coming along?

That was last weekend when I finished the filming.  This weekend I'm doing the editing.

So I'm past the filming stage where I could drop in their names somewhere.  But you're still filming I take it.  But nevermind;  those guys aren't playing the game by all indications.

Anyway, my society movie should be finished soon.  Either within this week or next weekend I'm guessing.

Then you can drink in its beauty.  And hopefully I the beauty of yours.

Well, I'm gonna go walk far into the veld now and fry me up some eggs and weenies and coffee.  Enjoy working on your movie which I hope you're speedily actually making.

You're not going very fast yourself there, speedy gonzales.

Anyway, I finished the editing of the entire motion picture this here past weekend.  Now I'm adding sound & music & finishing touches.  These 2 minutes are completely finished completely all in all ready and perfect.

This film is so moving, I was in tears this morning watching it.

Well, gotta get back to work.  On something else I'm afraid.  But I'll get back to this here production of pure marvelousness as soon as I get some time.

Nice to see nothing has changed over the years.

FYI- GOPRO for Keying... the biggest issue is the compression artifacts and lack of detail due to the lens. 4k of a tiny lens will still yield shit footage for keying well. Noise is an issue too. Even with a raw format and good lighting Keying is hard to make great. So you're just asking for more work going the gopro route. Just rent a decent camera for the green screen shoot. what you save in man hours will pay for the rental. Or borrow something.

Fun to see you guys are still at it. Nice to know that you're all still fighting the good fight and keeping the indie flame burning.

I've done a lot. seen a lot. learned a lot since the old days of indie club. Pre-Facebook Pre-Kardashian. Indieclub will always hold a special place in my travels as it was one of the first support groups I belonged to. Made the early days of movie making seem less impossible. Yeah and FUCK DVXUSERS that board never had the soul of indieclub.

I still connect with a few former members. Help each other out with advice and support. Even forgot that's actually where we met. So in this business it's really about relationships and who you want to work with and indieclub was the basis for those relationships. That's pretty cool when you think about it.

Yeah I'm not so sure about the video thing yet. I may do one after I've set up stuff for a shoot. Make it more fun.

Glitch was made into a pitch video for trying to get a pilot green lit. We got close but like most things in this business close doesn't really help. SyFy channel then some Canadia Channel circled it for a while.  I hacked toghether a semi trailer here-

vimeo.com/204274313

Here is the funky Pilot-ish thing we used to cut a pitch reel-

I Assume everyone here rented "High Schoolers Guide to College Parties"

As I try to round out all the Genres possilbe Horror, Scifi, Comedy...

Thanks for the links to Glitch. I had seen the short trailer before, but for some reason missed the 30 minute full pilot version. Awesome! Natalie kicks ass so well and looks great doing it. The total weirdness and bizarro world of Glitch is my cup of tea. A crime has been committed by SyFy that they didn't back this. I don't know who runs that network, but they don't give a shit anymore about their material. Not for a long time. None of them do.

I just bought High Schoolers on Amazon for 10.99. Pretty cool little movie. Just a laid back and enjoy the ride type deal. Nice. Hotties everywhere. Terrific! And of course Natalie is so damn great it's worth the price of admission no matter what.

Bravo Holdit. Bravo.

Thanks I'm glad you liked HSG.

As for GLITCH SYFY picked up another show about Bounty Hunters in the Future in Outerspace. SO it makes sense. They only saw the pitch reel, the Pilot script and Show Bible. The Full Episode was never really suppose to be seen.

Some back story-
The idea started out as a test for shooting some action. That evolved into a web series of 2 minute episodes. So we started adding to the test footage but it didn't worry too much about continuity since the thing would be shot one short scene at a time. My sales agent liked the idea and wanted us to put together a pitch reel. So we laid out the idea and tried to shoot only enough stuff to give us a pitch reel. So we picked key scenes. To make it easier to keep up with we shot full scenes so we would have footage to play with. Again- nobody was ever suppose to see the footage as a whole. So the main focus would be on the scenes that would play well in the teaser pitch reel.

The idea was to set the tone and style to go along with the script and show bible. The 30 minute version you watched was all the footage cobbled together to make a story. What you quickly notice is pacing and transitions are a bit off. But it has some momments. The actual PILOT SCRIPT has very little resemblance to the short. It is written with a real budget in mind and a much more flushed out story and better character development. Since I wasn't limited to a zero dollar budget I was able to make it arc better into the series arc.

That being said, I do think the short has some merit. It's frustrating to think what it could have been though. :) Again thanks for watching it.
