I&apo;ll say up front, forget about Youtube or Amazon or Vimeo. They are there to monetize on YOUR content. You need to be indie in streaming too if you want to avoid the same quicksand traps as DVD distribution pattern offered a few years ago.

Here&apo;s an option, called DaCast. I used it and it works. I parted with DaCast because I wanted to be a live TV stream, with a continuous broadcast 24/7. DaCast isn&apo;t appropriate for continuous stream, but as an option to monetize on movies you have created, thru an on-demand pay-per-view, it&apo;s worth a try.

Here&apo;s how DaCast work. First, the entry-level package is around $20 a month for some 300 hours of viewing. That means if you offer PPV at $4, you need 5 viewers a month to pay the package. You start making money at the 6th viewer, that ain&apo;t bad.

You upload your film(s) on DaCast&apo;s server, and DaCast platform allow you to build a player that will stream your movies. With that player, you can add as many films as you want, each of them with a separate paywall. So you can have a free trailer, and a paid option for the feature film.

Once your player is setup, all you have to do is to share it as much as you can. The player is compatible with Facebook sharing, Twitter too, and it has an embed option for anyone with a website. Pretty much the same as when you share a Youtube video.

So where Youtube only give you a tiny fraction of a penny at every view and you need thousand of views to get a dollar, DaCast&apo;s player gives you the full amount. Paypal claims its 2% transaction fee but that&apo;s all. All money from your views is collected in your DaCast&apo;s account, at the end of the billing cycle DaCast takes its $20 monthly fee from that balance, and the rest is all yours. It works very well, and you don&apo;t need thousand of views to make money with your films.

Some Content Delivery Networks I have used and I would recommend:
CDN77
Scale Engine

Right now I'm using MetaCDN, they are awesome for continuous live broadcast. But for VOD and PPV, DaCast has the best platform.

For two years I've owned my own server. A dedicated PC in a data center running Windows 2008, on which I installed a license of Wowza and Flash Media Server. Though it was the most cost-effective solution ($2500/year with no users limit, no bandwidth limit, and 5TB storage) it was also a pain to manage because my server was constantly attacked by pirates. My humble knowledge in IT and server administration was no match against hackers so after being hacked a few times I had to give up dedicated servers, and find a streaming service that handles security aspects.
