May I get an idea of what you people are using nowadays?

Are you surfing the net and watching videos on desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet or cellphone?

Just to get an idea of how to design web pages.

I just bought a little android running tablet.  Can't say I like it.  I like big screens and full sized keyboards.

But if that's how people surf the web nowadays, might as well start getting used to it and cater for it.

I'm desktop. I gave up tablets long ago though I still have an old Blackberry.
People do use tablets and cellphone to surf, but they typically stick to Twitter and Facebook. When they go on the 'real' web, they use desktop at home /  work / school.

You can signup to FreeHostedScripts and add the Online Users tracker, you will see what people are using when they visit your site. You will also notice very little people use a tablet. Google says otherwise of course.

Thanks dude!  Online user script very cool.

I can't see where the device they're using is listed but I do see the o/s.

Instead of making seperate mobile sites, I'm trying to find sort of a middle ground with just one site.  Here's an example homepage.  Does that look very, very simple on a big computer screen?  Yes.  Does it work easily on a small tablet, even when held in portrait orientation?  Sure does.  Not the next pages yet but that's where they'll be going in future.

I'm addicted to simplicity now.

What you want to do is called a responsive website. It reshapes and resize based on the resolution of the user's screen. There's a number of tools available out there to build a responsive website.

See this example. It's a local daily newspaper, they used a simple template to build a website that is totally compatible to any device and web browser. Try to resize your screen, and see how it behaves. That's responsive.

SV is right.  Good websites will detect the receiving device then call the version of the webpage that was designed to fit it... My site doesn't do that but the software I use allows me to see how my pages look on various devices.

I don't know, slowly but surely I'm starting to like my little tablet.

Sometimes I wish I took the slightly broader one, but what's done is done.

I bought it with one of those little leather folders with the keyboard inside, so it's like a very small laptop I can use while I'm on the lieu, or flying in a plane, or riding in a pipe car, or floathing in a space ship.

And it boots up much faster than my laptop.

Unfortunately it has popup ads.  I think they're from the Google playstore.  Any idea how to crush these?

That's the thing;  I want to make only one version.  Not different ones for different devices.
But I got sort of the idea now.  Like this page. Resizes to fit screen size.
