Our newest indie film release, Jurassy Park, is coming along splendidly.

It shall feature something really unexpected:  Dinosaurs.

But these aren't your run of the mill dinosaurs.  These have nothing to do with mills at all.  Instead, they spew out hot whirlwinds of hot temperatures, that sweep their pray off their feet and whirl them into the dinosaur's mouth, ready to be devoured as a hot, cooked meal!

I got the idea from dragons.  Dragons spit fire you see?  So now we make the dragons dinosaurs, and the dinosaurs have like hot sucking whirlwind tornadoes coming from their mouths.

The story shall revolve around a park where dinosaurs can be viewed.  But then something goes wrong and the dinosaurs start misbehaving.  The lesson of the movie shall be in the tagline:

"Brrooooooooooooooheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!"

(That's dinolanguage meaning "I'm a screaming T-rex".)

I have a T-rex model with teeth and tongue I can donate.  You'll have to  rig it yourself though.. I think I still have the paint job but if I don't I'd be willing to make a new set of maps.. I made this CGI puppet over 15 years ago.  It was one of my first models.

Cool model, James!!

Thanks!  I made that before we had such wonderful modeling programs as Zbrush.  Instead, I had to model on a polygon by polygon basis. Moving one vertex at a time in many instances.  Check out the link below the picture to see what I mean.  There's also a video showing the completed model in action.

Thank you James. It might be quicker to work with a few bluescreen shots.

We'll call your dinosaur JT Rex in your honor.

I love those back handed complements. Keep'em comin' ....... Just curious though; why do you need bluescreen shots? You probably don't know this but a CGI model can be rendered with a transparent background (alpha channel) so that you can composite it onto any background you want. No need for a bluescreen. There are some videos that can help you understand the concept on Youtube. Do a search for "digital compositing" and I'm sure you'll find something.

Just like bluescreen.

Script 20 per cent complete now.

Do you have a physical model or just a cgi one?

Marius, you need to pay more attention.  I was always talking about a CGI model.  They are sometimes called puppets.  If you would have spent 5 seconds going to the link I posted below the picture, you would not be thinking it was a physical model... and you would not be thinking those are the models finished teeth.

I look forward to seeing your movie when it is complete.  How long will the movie be, 3 or 4 minutes?

Not that short.  It&apo;ll have a decent duration.

I assumed you&apo;d play a small part in it so you&apo;ll be the live guide on the little screen in the park vehicle.

Just say if you feel like creating some cgi shots too.

And it&apo;s not that preposterous to suggest you might have sculpted a physical model of a dinosaur, mmm?

We also need a lawyer.  Would anybody be interested in a 2 line part and then being grabbed away by a dinosaur?

No time to do any CGI for your little project.  You can have the cgi model of the rex if you want. It's just the polygon mesh along with the model for the inside of the mouth.  I was under the impression that you have a little knowledge of CGI and a program that you can import an .obj file into then rig and animate.  If not, the model won't do you any good.

James, you worked with Adrien Morot?

I don't recognize that name..

Just did a search.  He's an FX artist.. Nope. Never met him.

Oh OK! He was in charge of some of Jurassic Park animatronics dinos. The breathing triceratops with Sam Neil on it was his work (with the help of his team of course). Maybe he's done the poo as well.  :-)

SV, I think maybe you are talking about the Jurassic Park movie.  I worked on the theme ride.....  Besides, Joey Ortega was the lead artist for the triceratops in the movie as far as I know. Maybe Adrien worked with him or maybe he was the project manager for that character...

Yep, the movie!
And that's very possible Adrien worked under supervision of Joey Ortega too. I know Adrien had a team, but maybe he wasn't lead on that shot either. So many people are involved in every single shot for these blockbusters, it's crazy...!

I agree.  Remember when Dick Smith would do a movie like Little Big Man, The Exorcist, Altered States or The GodFather with little more than his basement and a few talented helpers.......  Back then, that's when I wanted to be a make-up artist.. I'm told that today, a talented artist is just a cog in the machinery. Hired to do one specific thing (sculpt, paint, mold, ect....).  Sad times.

Yes, Hollywood movies are now made like in a factory. One person is doing one task. I can understand it goes faster that way, but it makes the job very boring after a while. If you're good at lighting a CGI scene, you'll get hired to light scenes your entire career. "What do you mean, you like to texture map. You're here to light scenes, period."

A friend of mine - we were running a small 3D studio in Montreal in 1996 - made it to Hollywood, working on major films. This is his 2011 demo reel. Very cool stuff! He's now off the film business, and focus on video games.

Oh dear.  Indieclub isn't much for collaborations.

Mike Conway?

You can super-impose a pic of my head onto the lawyer.

Thank you Conway!  Sounds super.  But instead of a still pic, for the same trouble you might as well record the entire part.  It's just a few seconds.  Here it is as in the script:

(Professor Lampy (project visionary) is visited by a lawyer, waving stack of papers at Lampy.)  Shot of lawyer talking at camera lens.

        LAWYER
    Look at these complaints!
I'm shutting down your project unless you can
get an endorsement from some more responsible
    people in the field.

        LAMPY
    Why?

        LAWYER
Your idea is just not safe.

        LAMPY
    Why do you say that?

Suddenly a giant T-rex chomps up the lawyer from above.

        LAMPY
Oh dear.  Could it be true?

Just film yourself in a suit and perhaps a briefcase, on a bluescreen talking at the camera waving papers.  Then when you're done talking, jump up throwing the papers away;  our special effects magic team will add the dinosaur.
For your trouble you can have 5 seconds of advertising something legal in the credits.  Perhaps your annual backyard film festival and a website?  It's up to you.

Still aren't teased into it?

That's your dialog?? pretty basic and unrealistic. Try this LAWYER Look at these complaints I'm showing you now! I'm shutting down your project unless you can get endorsements from some more responsible fun loving people in the field. LAMPY what for I'm asking you? LAWYER Your ideas and other thoughts are just not safe. LAMPY I'm confused. Please tell me, why do you say that? Suddenly a giant T-rex chomps up the lawyer from above. LAMPY Oh dear me oh my. Could it be true? Could it? .................Now THAT's drama.

I'd have to see the script and a sample of the dino effects you will be doing. I know you're just making this thing for fun but I'd hate for it to ruin my career down the line.. I've got a reputation in this town and I don't want it sullied by a joke project....

We wouldn't want that.

Can't you just play along for once, James?

If you're too shy, just come up with a character and stage name so nobody will recognise you.

Because you think the opportunity is beneath you?

Well we wouldn't want to damage your upstanding reputation would we now.  Your film career has been so lucrative too.  Helping me would destroy that.

Forget I asked, and good luck!
