AUTHOR SUBJECT: MPEG 2 export shifts sound a bit later, why?

I'm exporting a 2 hour film with Adobe Premiere CS5 and found the fastest codec is MPEG 2, which looks good on a big screen TV.

Problem is, the sound becomes unsynchronised, moving a few frames too late when viewed on TV.  Why is this and how can this be fixed?

I looked for something like interleaved frame settings but no such thing.

Have anybody solved this issue before?

That's a common issue when encoding in MPEG, other codec formats also have that problem occasionally. It happens mainly when you mix 24 FPS, 30 FPS, 60i and still image elements. The sound track synch gets mixed up with these different formats and shifts over time.

To fix that, in Premiere preferences you must have an audio setting that says 'Lock audio to (X) fame rate" or something like that. Lock your audio to the same rate as your MPEG export settings.

Usually, the best way is to export video and audio in separate tracks, and interleave them in another step.

Thanks dude.

I couldn't find any such lock audio to anything, but I used mpeg 2 for exporting until I was sure I made my last list of changes whilst viewing the resulting movie on a big screen TV.

In the end I just exported as .h264 (.mp4) which takes more than 3 times longer to export but which doesn't have the sound synchronization issue.

It's been exporting since yesterday and will be complete tomorrow afternoon if there aren't any power failures.

I remember seeing the sound sync problem also on my satellite TV feed when it was using mpeg 2 compression.  Fortunately a newer model decoder solved that by the looks of it.

She is completed!  Hoorah!  Slightly earlier than I thought.  I was expecting completion only by tomorrow at noon, but it seems it didn't take quite as long as it said.

I'll go celebrate.
